Tommee Tippee Groegg Review: Is This Glowing Nursery Thermometer Worth It?

Posted on June 13, 2017July 2, 2026 by Aiden

The parenting books tell you that your newborn’s nursery should be a perfectly regulated haven. In reality, you will spend your first week home staring at a sleeping baby, panicking that they are either freezing or overheating because their tiny bodies can’t regulate temperature yet.

Instead of constantly second-guessing layers or doing the classic neck-touch check every twenty minutes, I bought the Groegg digital room thermometer. It completely stripped the guesswork out of bedtime panic.

What Is the Groegg and How Does It Work?

The Groegg is a simple, mains-powered digital thermometer that changes color based on the ambient room temperature. It also doubles as a subtle night light, meaning you won’t trip over a stray toy during 3 AM feeds.

Here are the core features out of the box:

  • Permanent backlit LCD readout for clear nighttime viewing.
  • Gentle ambient night light that isn’t bright enough to keep anyone awake.
  • UK mains-powered adapter included (no wrestling with dead AA batteries at midnight).
  • Certified to British and European safety standards.

The Color-Coded Reality Check

Medical guidelines state that the ideal safe sleeping temperature for a baby is between 16°C and 20°C to help reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). If you walk into a room at 16°C in the dead of winter, it feels absolutely freezing to an adult.

The Groegg keeps you honest by shifting through four distinct color alerts at a single glance:

  • Blue (Under 16°C): Too cold. Time to add a heavier sleep sack or turn up the heating.
  • Yellow (16°C – 20°C): The sweet spot. This is the ideal, safe sleeping zone.
  • Orange (21°C – 24°C): Warm. Time to strip off a layer of clothing or open a window.
  • Red (Over 25°C): Too hot. The room needs immediate cooling down.

The Ultimate Travel Survival Hack

You might think a room thermometer belongs permanently glued to a nursery shelf. However, this thing became an absolute lifesaver when we packed it for a holiday to Hong Kong.

Hotel air conditioning is notoriously unpredictable. Walking from a humid, boiling-hot street into an icy hotel room makes it impossible to judge what your kid should wear to bed.

Because the Groegg is incredibly compact, it took up zero premium luggage space. Having that instant color feedback in an unfamiliar climate completely saved our sanity while traveling.

The Verdict: A Nursery Essential?

If you want a low-stress way to maintain a safe sleeping environment without overthinking sleep sack TOG ratings every night, the Groegg is a non-negotiable buy. It’s cheap, incredibly accurate, and acts as a vital backup brain when you are too exhausted to think.

If you want to grab one for the nursery or your next family trip, you can check out the official Gro Company site or pick up the updated version directly on amazon.
