Mothercare Lulworth Tallboy Review: The Small Bedroom Storage Lifesaver? – Product Review

Posted on February 28, 2017July 1, 2026 by Aiden

When you’re prepping for a newborn, you think you’ve got everything sorted. We bought the Mothercare Lulworth Changing Unit thinking it would handle the wardrobe setup, but we quickly realized a brutal reality. Between the clothes we bought and the mountain of outfits we were gifted, we completely ran out of space before the baby even arrived.

To fix the overflow without completely crowding the small bedroom, we ended up grabbing the matching Mothercare Lulworth Tallboy. Luckily, we managed to snag it at 50% off, which made a massive difference. If you aren’t in an absolute rush to get your nursery sorted, my top tip is to hang fire and wait for Mothercare’s Black Friday deals in November to land a proper bargain.

Smart Storage for Tight Spaces

The standout feature of this unit is definitely the slim, vertical footprint. Nursery rooms are rarely huge, and the last thing you want is bulky, obtrusive cupboards taking over the entire floor space.

The Tallboy design gives you plenty of extra storage upwards rather than outwards. It packs 5 deep drawers that have been ideal for stashing away the endless cycle of baby clothes, sleepsuits, and bibs.

Plus, it comes backed by a 5-year product guarantee. When you’re buying furniture that’s going to get constantly pulled, slammed, and abused by growing kids, that level of warranty gives you a lot more confidence in the purchase.

Flat-Pack Build Tips: Avoiding the Pitfalls

If you’ve already built the Lulworth changing unit or any other furniture in this specific range, putting the Tallboy together will be an absolute breeze. The process is pretty straightforward, but there are a couple of practical steps you need to follow to avoid ruining your room or your sanity.

  • Protect your flooring: When you crack open the boxes, do not throw away the packaging. Use the flat, padded cardboard it arrives in as a protective base on your floor. If you have laminate flooring like us, this is essential to avoid nasty scratches while assembling the heavy outer frame.
  • Build the skeleton first: The instructions have you construct the side panels first before piecing the main outer frame together.
  • Watch the corners: Be meticulous when laying out your parts. Do not mix up the 4 leg corners. They look similar but are specifically cut to distinguish the front from the back of the unit. Get this wrong, and you’ll be stripping it all down again.
  • The drawers are straightforward: Building the actual drawers uses the exact same logic as the changing unit. All the pilot holes align perfectly, so you can just power through them once the main frame is standing.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Space-saving layout: The tall, thin design fits perfectly into small bedrooms without breaking your flow.
  • Impressive depth: The 5 drawers offer serious storage capacity for all your baby gear, keeping chaos at bay.
  • Solid warranty: A 5-year guarantee protects against the standard wear and tear of family life.
  • Easy assembly: Straightforward instructions and perfectly pre-drilled holes make the build simple.

Cons

  • Full price is steep: It can be expensive if bought at retail price, making it essential to wait for sales.
  • Easy to misalign: If you aren’t paying attention to the specific leg corner pieces, you can easily build it backwards.

The Verdict

Is the Mothercare Lulworth Tallboy worth your hard-earned money? Yes, but try to buy it on sale. It completely solved our nursery clothing overflow without turning our small bedroom into an unnavigable obstacle course. It feels sturdy, looks smart, and handles the relentless volume of baby gear with ease. Just make sure to build it on the delivery cardboard to save your laminate floors, pay close attention to the leg orientation, and try to time your purchase around a major sale event like Black Friday.
